While I may not be the most avid movie goer or conoseur i do enjoy going to the movies but only when it’s something i know I’ll enjoy. To that end here are the movies that I plan on seeing in 2014. Remember that everything is subjective and that one persons taste may not be shared by others.
First off in January we have I, Frankenstein, from the same guy that brought us Underworld so many years ago. I saw the trailer when I went to see The Hobbit this holiday and was glad to finally have another gothic sci-fi movie in the style of Underworld. I only hope that it doesn’t over stay its welcome like Underworld did with its many sequels but the trailer gives me confidence it won’t.
In February we have the new remake of the 80’s classic Robocop. I remember the original and am very curious as well as fearful as to what they have done with the series. As with just about any movie these the special effects look great although i don’t know if i like Murphy’s new black paint job, granted they seem to poke fun at this very fact in the trailer so we’ll see if they manage to pull it off when the time comes.
In March we have 2 movies, the first being the sequel to 300, aptly named, 300 Rise of an Empire. When the first movie came out many years ago it was a breadth of fresh air from all the samey action movies of the time. The high contrast style along with the uninhibited and super stylized violence and memorable scenes and lines made it an instant classic for most movie goers. I just hope this sequel lives up to the high expectations it’s predecessor left behind.
The second movie coming in march is Need for Speed. I am of the opinion that Fast and the Furious out stayed its welcome after the one where they race through the abandoned mine and am glad to see a new franchise tackle the fast racing scene. I know nothing about it yet but based on the poster it seems to use the cars that star in the recently released Need for Speed: Rivals. I look forward to seeing if it breathes new life into the fast car movie scene.
In April we have Captain America: The Winter Soldier. I’m not a particular fan of Captain American but the first movie was enjoyable and showed moviegoers a pretty accurate story of the origins of Steve Rogers, now that were back in the present his past is starting to catch up to him. I’m not keen as to the plot of the movie other than Winter Soldier takes the war to shield but what interests me is the aftermath and what will come after, and the after credits scene which should shine some light on Age of Ultron.
In may where treated to what seems to be the ultimate incarnation of Godzilla. This is the second movie reboot for the most iconic monster in all of movie history and one many will approach with caution however after witnessing the superb trailer i can’t wait till it’s released in theaters.
The second big thing coming in may is X-Men: Days of Future Past. We all know that fox has done a very poor job when it comes to our favourite mutants and we also know that Hugh Jackman/Wolverine is the main star of every movie he appears in. All we can do right now is hope that with this movie they fix all the stupid continuity mistkaes they made during the original trilogy so that we have some hope at a decent X-Men movie some time in the future before Hugh becomes unable to fullfill the role anymore.
The final movie in may will be Disney’s Maleficent. Making an entire movie based on, what many consider, to be Disney’s most iconic villain that is not based on the original story of snow-white sounds risky but after seeing the trailer this year i was intrigued. The trailer also won me over after they showed scenes with some of the most iconic scenes from their original Snow White. It will prove interesting to see how they bring there #1 villain to the big screen with today’s technology.
June comes around with its summer blockbusters and starts things off with How to Train your Dragon 2. The first movie as entertaining and opened the door for lots of interesting adventures and bow is this one. After seeing the trailer and having a massive plot bombshell dropped on me i now need to see this and see why things happened as they did.
June finishes with every ones favourite robots in Transformers: Age of Extinction. There are many things that make me look forward to it such as a brand new human cast and the appearance of the fan favourite Dinobots. These two things make me look forward to it, although i will miss the military guys from the first movie who i enjoyed watching battle the decepticons.
August continues summer extravaganza with Marvel’s movie of the year in Guardians of the Galaxy. I wasn’t a particular fan of the GotG but the Ultimate Spiderman cartoon quickly made me like them, especially Rocket Racoon. We have also been told that the third cosmic gem will make its appearance and with the presence of Gamora, Thanos’ adopted daughter, we are ever so close to an infinity gauntlet movie.
Many of us fans screamed when we heard rumors of Michael Bay altering some major key points of our favourite turtles and were relieved when it was confirmed that the proposed script was unanimously rejected by the studio and even more relieved when behind the scenes pictures began to surface showing actors with motion capture suits with full-sized shells on set. So far Every other TMNT movie ever mad has had its own charms, from the original 90’s movie with full suits to the more recent 3DCG movie where they begin to act like true ninjas and i hope bay manages to capture the true essence in his movie.
The expendable quickly became one of my favourite actions movies for it’s over the top gratuitous action and the presence of every action movie hero that i grew up with. There really is not much to say other than there will be lots of bullets and explosions and i will enjoy all of them.
August ends our summer movie extravaganza with Sin City, A Dame to Kill For. I haven’t read the graphic novels but i do remember enjoying the first Sin City for its unique style and gritty look at its story and characters. I don’t know what to expect but I imagine it’s a prequel since, well, things happen at the end of the first that can’t really be reversed.
We end the year with the final installment in The Hobbit trilogy with There and Back Again. If you read my post on The Desolation of Smaug you’l know i have mixed feelings about the movies themselves but as something to finish up a year i can’t think of anything better.
And there you have it, all the movies i look forward to in the coming year and why I do so. Hopefully you saw something you didn’t know about or that you were dismissing and caught your eye…or maybe not and you just enjoy reading random things on the net.
